A lot of us are trying to lose a few pounds in the new year. Brentwood High school wrestlers Deshaun Johnson and Gary Silerio certainly were on Saturday morning as they desperately tried to make weight for the St. John Vianney Tournament in Kirkwood.

Both have been wrestling this season at least one weight class above last year. Johnson has been at 160 with a goal of reaching last year’s 152. Silerio has been at 152 with a goal of hitting 145. BHS coach Roy Hughes told them they needed to hit the goals by the Saturday tournament.

They both did and Johnson went on to win the tournament at 152 pounds. Silerio reached the title match at 145 pounds but lost 3-2 to Maplewood’s Matt Green, who is 15-4. Five other Brentwood wrestlers took second place as well, keying the team to a third-place finish out of eight teams.

On Friday after wrestling practice Johnson weighed 157. Needing to cut about 5 pounds, that night he went jogging in his neighborhood and “I ran until I couldn’t run anymore,” he said. At 6:30 a.m. Saturday at BHS, before leaving for Vianney, he weighed 154, “so I ran up and down the hallways of the school, then did situps on the bus.” On the scale at Vianney he was 152.2, just enough to qualify for the 152-pound weight class.

Silerio weighed 147 at BHS Saturday morning, so he ran through the halls and stairwells trying to shed 2 pounds. By weigh-in time at Vianney he was 144.3, easily qualifying to compete at 145.

Johnson and Silerio certainly didn’t look weak from all the weight loss. Johnson especially – he recorded four pins, each in under 2 minutes.

“I was pretty tired but after I drank a couple of Gatorades and got something to eat I felt better,” said Johnson, who is 28-2. “It was more of a mental thing for me to overcome. Instead of thinking, ‘Woe is me, I had to cut all this weight,’ I had to get that out of my head and just focus on doing my best.”

Taking second place for BHS, along with Silerio, were Narvell Jordan, Tayveon Brown, Justin Shipley, Sam Tilton and Donovan Obando. Placing third were Chase Lynch and Richard McQuay. Lynch went 2-1 and boosted his record to 22-9.
