The Brentwood High School baseball team beat Valley Park last night to advance to the district championship against Maplewood-Richmond Heights at 5 p.m. tonight at Brentwood Park. If the Eagles win tonight, it will be their first district title since 1994.
Kevin Smith pitched a one-hitter but Brentwood trailed 1-0 until the sixth inning, when the Eagles hit three huge doubles: Smith’s to start the inning, Dylan McGehee’s to tie the score and Tyler Jones’s to take the lead. Now BHS faces MRH, a team it has beaten twice this season, by scores of 14-0 and 2-0. In the 2-0 game, MRH pitched their ace, Kevin Sapp, who isn’t expected to start tonight since he pitched seven innings of the Blue Devils’ victory over Barat Academy last night. Brentwood will pitch Ryan Jones, who is coming off a loss to Hancock but shut out MRH the last time he faced them.
The winner of tonight’s game will play the District 6 champion, New Bloomfield, on May 23.
