Brad Kern is on the verge of winning his 100th game as the head boys basketball coach at Brentwood High School.
The Eagles won their season opener on Monday to push Kern’s career record to 99-100. Win No. 100 could come as early as Monday, Dec. 2, when the team plays Confluence Prep in the Valley Park Tournament. BHS is the top seed in the tournament and Confluence is seeded eighth among eight teams.
This is Kern’s ninth season at BHS. He was an assistant coach at Springfield Kickapoo from 1998 to 2001 and an assistant at Jennings from 2001 to 2005.
Kern took the job at Brentwood in 2005, a basketball program that had gone 82-163 in the previous 10 seasons, with only one winning record. His teams posted losing records for the first three years, but have had winning records four out of the past five years. Since 2008 they’ve gone 75-53 and averaged 15 wins a year. His first conference title came last year.
“I’m proud of the direction of the program,” he said.
