The Brentwood Spirit recently asked each of the three candidates in the Brentwood mayoral race to have one of their supporters write a short essay, up to 300 words, on why he or she backs that candidate. Following is the essay we received from David Dimmitt, who will vote for Chris Thornton on April 7.

Dimmitt has lived in Brentwood for 14 years, is a member of the Brentwood Planning and Zoning Commission and is an attorney for Witzel, Kanzler, Dimmitt & Kanzler. He has known Chris Thornton for five years.

I’m supporting Chris Thornton as mayor of Brentwood for his positive vision for the city, his approach to problem-solving and his character.

The last three years I have witnessed hostility and virtual gridlock at the Brentwood Board of Aldermen. Additionally, there appears to be a level of distrust between city staff and the board. We need a fresh start. The next mayor should be without any baggage, history or allegiance to any particular side. Chris is this person.

We need a mayor who addresses problems in a professional, analytical, patient manner and who is able to work with others who hold different opinions. Chris is an attorney and also earned a B.S. and master’s degrees in physics. His background ensures this analytical, patient and professional approach to problem-solving. He bases his decisions upon facts, not speculation or hearsay.

I agree with Chris’s vision for the city. He believes we need to protect the residential districts while also ensuring continued commercial success. He understands that this city relies heavily on sales tax revenue and that this revenue stream needs to continue. We don’t pay property taxes, unlike the residents of neighboring communities. However, we do enjoy great city-provided services. I and many others do not want to see the city begin to impose property taxes to continue to provide these great services. Also, Chris wants to reinvest the new income stream from the recent successful TIF projects back into the city through capital improvements to benefit all residents instead of growing the city payroll.

Brentwood is a great place to live. Drury just purchased 50 percent of the Joseph H. White Building, clearly indicating the business sector’s willingness to invest in us. New families continue to move here. Chris is the best candidate to ensure the continued success of Brentwood.
