By Steve Bowman Editor, The Brentwood Spirit Only in track and field could 1.4 seconds be so long. The girls’ 400-meter relay team from Brentwood High School missed qualifying for state by 1.41 seconds at a Class 2 sectional meet Saturday at Principia. Their time of 54 seconds was good for sixth place, 1.40 seconds behind fourth-place Hayti’s 52.60. Only [...]

By Steve Bowman Editor, The Brentwood Spirit The Brentwood High School girls’ soccer team is on a roll. Whether they have enough momentum to win their next game remains to be seen. The Eagles finished their regular season last week with 8-0 and 10-1 victories over Valley Park and Hancock. The games marked their fourth and fifth wins in a [...]

By Steve Bowman Editor, The Brentwood Spirit There are some huge egos in sports these days, from the pros all the way down to high school. So it was refreshing to see how well Kevin Smith handled being pulled from the mound in Brentwood High School’s game with Maplewood-Richmond Heights last week. Smith had a no-hitter going after four innings [...]

By Steve Bowman Editor, The Brentwood Spirit Justice Bratcher was a skinny freshman when he joined the track and field team last spring at Hazelwood East High School. He thought he’d be a sprinter until he sized up his teammates. “Everybody there was fast,” he said. “I’m fast, but not like the guys on their varsity.” But instead of quitting, [...]

By Steve Bowman Editor, The Brentwood Spirit Sometimes a small thing can make a gigantic difference. In baseball, the bunt is the smallest hit you can make, but it can decide the outcome of the entire game. That’s what happened in Brentwood High School’s dogfight with Principia last Wednesday at Brentwood Park. The score had been tied four times when [...]

By Steve Bowman Editor, The Brentwood Spirit The Brentwood High School girls’ soccer team will probably end up sharing the conference title with Crossroads this year. The players are not thrilled about that but they’re still better off than they were a year ago at this time. And they seem to be a better team. After ruling the South Central [...]

By Steve Bowman Editor, The Brentwood Spirit Doesn’t Ryan Vogeli know that sophomores are not supposed to throw no-hitters? Before last Thursday, only two no-hitters had been thrown by Brentwood High School pitchers in the past six seasons. Ryan Jones did it last season and Andrew Newberry in 2007. Both were seniors at the time. But Vogeli, a sophomore, no-hit [...]

On Saturday they’ll try to change that. They’ll compete at the Class 2, District 2 meet on May 5 in Louisiana, Mo. The top four finishers in each event at district [...]

By Steve Bowman Editor, The Brentwood Spirit Raven Hudspeth ran in the shadow of Taylor Harrell last spring during Brentwood High School’s track and field season. Literally. Harrell, a junior, was the team’s star sprinter, finishing 10th at state in the 400-meter dash. Hudspeth was just a freshman running track for the first time. “She was really fast,” Hudspeth said [...]
